Coco Date Shakes

A date…shake? We had never even heard of date shakes before we moved to Southern California. But if you’re driving to or from the desert, you’re certain to pass at least one date shake stand. Date shakes are a smooth and creamy ice-cold treat made from the fruit of the desert – refreshing and naturally sweetened.

Our favorite dates to work with are Medjool dates, which are known as the best-tasting variety of dates in the world. In addition to being a good source of fiber, they contain no added sugar, are high in antioxidants and contain important vitamins and minerals…not to mention that they are gluten-free, vegan, halal, and kosher.

In honor of National Medjool Date Day on February 4, we thought we’d share our own version of date shakes, made with no added sugar and no dairy. We also gave them a slight cocoa color and flavor, because that way we could pass them off to the pickiest of our eaters as “chocolate” shakes and we wouldn’t be telling a lie. These are great for dessert but, frankly, no one would complain if you served them for breakfast.

Coco Date Shakes

1 large banana, peeled and frozen

6 to 8 large Medjool dates, pitted

1 cup unsweetened almond milk

1/2 cup coconut milk

1 T. (unsweetened) cocoa powder

In a large blender or food processor, combine all ingredients and blend until smooth and creamy. Serve immediately. Makes two large shakes or three small ones.

    Oh, yum!!!! This sounds so refreshing and healthy. I’ve got some dates stashed in my pantry. Quick! Let’s make a shake!
