Orange-Ginger Lemonade is a Refreshing Treat

Got fresh produce from the farmers’ market? That means it’s a chance to make orange-ginger lemonade.

Of course we’ve mentioned that on farmers’ market days we love to cook greens and make pesto. But we love doing fun things with the fruit as well – and that means more than just making mini-jitos. When we saw all of the fresh citrus and ginger at our local farmers’ market, we knew we needed to make some Orange-Ginger Lemonade. It’s unbelievably refreshing, and the kids just lap it up:

A fresh and flavorful lemonade made with fresh oranges and ginger from the farmers' market.

Cuisine American
Keyword citrus, ginger, lemonade, orange
Prep Time 30 minutes
Servings 4

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp finely grated fresh ginger
  • juice of two large lemons
  • juice of one large orange
  • additional water and crushed ice

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, heat together the water and sugar until the sugar dissolves. Stir in the ginger and set aside the mixture to cool.

  2. Squeeze the lemons and orange to yield approximately 1 cup of juice. Add the cooled ginger syrup mixture and stir well. Pour the mixture into a standard 60-ounce pitcher and add enough crushed ice to fill the pitcher about 1/2 full. Add water to fill up the rest of the pitcher.

  3. Serve immediately in a tall glass or cup with fresh lemon and orange wedges.

Why is it good to make your own lemonade? For starters, have you seen what’s in store-bought lemonade lately? Most varieties have every imaginable form of corn syrup and artificial flavorings. The cheaper it is, the more likely it is to have junk in the ingredients. Real lemonade is so much better for you, and tastes better too.

Second, it’s good to get the kids involved – and to help them connect the fruit with the actual drink. Lemonade isn’t just something that comes in a bottle. It’s something that comes from squeezing actual juice from a lemon.

And last, it does take a little bit of an effort. That’s fine, because you don’t want it to be an every day kind of thing. But for a special dinner – or a special afternoon treat – it’ll be that crowd-pleasing drink that everyone asks for again and again.
