Thanks a lot, summer. You wowed us with your tomatoes and your basil, and then you left us. Is it any wonder we’re thinking about ditching the tomatoes and giving a fall makeover to our favorite foods like pizza? Don’t get us wrong – we loved every last bit of those summer flavors. But now that the temperature is starting to dip, we’ve been inspired to make some pizza with these beautiful heirloom apples from Frieda’s.
Why heirloom apples? They have that crisp, crunchy fall taste, with a little bit of tart mixed in with the sweet, and the all-around deliciousness of a good old-fashioned apple.
“But why apple pizza?!?” moans our kid in the background. Well, once the apple gets cooked up in the pizza it’s juicy but not super-sweet. We gave it a little more of a classic flavor by adding a little salty (bacon) and creamy (Fontina) flavors. The result: A tasty fall pizza that’ll send your taste buds soaring (and had the kids asking for seconds).
Heirloom Apple Pizza
1 medium pizza dough (we used a 1-pound package from Trader Joe’s)
1 T. extra-virgin olive oil
1 medium heirloom apple, cored and very thinly sliced
2 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
4 ounces Fontina cheese, grated
Preheat oven to 475 degrees. Shape the pizza dough as desired. Brush liberally with olive oil. Spread the apple slices and bacon crumbles evenly over the pizza. Top with grated Fontina cheese. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and the crust is golden brown. Serves 4.
