The Hundred-Foot Journey

We love food movies here in Jolly Tomato land. (Have you seen our Food Movies Pinterest board?) That’s why we’re thrilled to watch The Hundred-Foot Journey from DreamWorks Pictures, based on the novel by Richard C. Morais and directed by Lasse Hallstrom.

Plot Summary

In ‘The Hundred-Foot Journey,’ Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal) is a culinary ingénue with the gastronomic equivalent of perfect pitch. Displaced from their native India, the Kadam family settles in the quaint village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in the south of France. The picturesque village seems the ideal place to settle down and open an Indian restaurant, the Maison Mumbai.

That is, until Madame Mallory (Academy Award®-winner Helen Mirren) gets wind of it. Mme. Mallory is the chilly chef proprietress of Le Saule Pleureur, a Michelin starred, classical French restaurant.

Her icy protests against the new Indian restaurant a hundred feet from her own turn to all-out war between the two establishments. But Hassan manages to win over Mme. Mallory with his passion for French haute cuisine and his mysteriously delicious talent.

Got all that? So basically, you already know you’re going to see a lot of amazing French and Indian foods. And if you’re asking, “Well, sure, but how can I possibly cook that kind of stuff at home?” the answer is, “You can!”

The nice folks at DreamWorks have given us a series of very cook-able recipes inspired by the movie. We in turn have been inspired to try our hands at a few classic dishes. In the omelette recipe below, you can learn how to cook that perfect French omelette from the Le Cordon Bleu Cuisine Foundation. (No culinary degree required.)

Insiders’ tip: Traditionally, omelettes are “rolled” onto the plate using a cloth. That gives the omelette its perfect round torpedo shape. It also does the double duty of absorbing excess butter on the egg.

Hungry yet? You’ll be even hungrier once you check out this clip of the movie:
