Frozen Smoothie Bowls for #StreamTeam

It’s late January…is your world frozen? Whether you’re surrounded by winter, or just dreaming of wintry weather, you’ll have an extra-special chilly thrill watching Frozen Planet, which is coming to Netflix on January 28.

This Emmy-winning documentary takes a look at life and the environment in the Arctic and Antarctic. It’s spectacularly beautiful, and so lifelike that it’ll have you cuddling up under a blanket on the couch no matter what the weather.

So what’s a good thing to eat while you’re watching a show about a very cold place? You probably think we’re going to say ‘hot chocolate’ or ‘soup’ or something similarly warm. But actually, we’re going in the exact opposite direction: We’re making smoothie bowls with frozen fruit.

You see, winter can be one of those dead periods for fresh fruit and even though you think you’re going to get by for another few months on apples and oranges, the truth is you need – and want – more variety. Enter frozen fruits – ideally those fruits you froze back when you had too many peaches, blueberries, cherries, strawberries, and so on.

Sure, you may be able to buy some fresh berries from South America – and you can definitely use those to garnish your smoothie bowl. But the real “heart” of that smoothie bowl is going to come from those frozen fruits you’ve been hoarding ever since you got them by the barrel last summer.

Frozen Smoothie Bowls

A basic smoothie bowl recipe that you can adapt to whatever fruits or toppings you have on hand.

  • 1 cup milk or almond milk or soy milk
  • 1 cup yogurt
  • 2 cups frozen fruit berries, bananas, mango, pineapple, etc.
  • 1 cup leafy greens optional

Toppings (optional; choose your favorite)

  • Fresh fruit
  • Granola
  • Chia seeds
  • Nuts
  • Hemp seeds


  1. Place all ingredients in a blender. Puree until smooth. Add toppings if desired.

Add in some leafy greens if you’re feeling adventurous, and then go all-out with a variety of toppings (granola, chia seeds, nuts, etc.). If you wanted to put some chocolate chips in there too, we wouldn’t tell anyone.

Of course these smoothie bowls make a healthy breakfast, but they also make a fun snack to eat while you watch all of those polar bears, penguins, and ice floes. Watch out for that narwhal!
