We know you make guacamole with lime juice, but can you make it with orange juice? Orange guacamole? We’re happy to report that yes, it’s a thing, and it’s delicious.
If you’re wondering how we came to this brainstorm, you have to envision this scene. We’ve got two kids in the kitchen; one squeezing Seville oranges, one mashing avocados for guacamole. While we’re wondering “What should we make with Seville oranges?” we’re simultaneously thinking, “We need some limes to squeeze into that guacamole.” And then – like a light bulb suddenly switching on – the thought occurs: “Hey! – Orange guacamole!” (We call that our “Holy Guacamole” moment.)
Seville Oranges
A few brief words on Seville oranges (from Melissa’s Produce): They are also known as “bitter oranges” and are prized for making orange marmalade. With a thick, puckered skin and well-defined segments, they yield a great deal of extremely tart juice. They grow in Spain and throughout the Mediterranean region – although these beauties here are California-grown.
Happily, they taste great in guacamole too. It’s a little bit of a different taste than what you might be used to; there’s a stronger citrus flavor, but it’s a refreshing change nonetheless. The addition of red onions gives it a bright, crisp crunch. Perfect for game day.

Orange Guacamole with Seville Oranges and Onions
A flavorful guacamole with a tart citrus taste and crunchy red onions.
Ingredients
- 2 large ripe avocados
- juice of one Seville orange (about 2 tbsp.)
- 1/2 medium red onion, peeled and minced
- 1/2 tsp salt
Instructions
-
Peel the avocados, remove the pit, and mash in a large bowl. Stir in the orange juice, red onion, and salt. Serve immediately. If you need to store it before serving, cover it with plastic wrap so that the entire surface of the guacamole is covered (to prevent browning).
Postscript: The kids liked it so much, we made it two nights in a row. That’s a first.
