Apple Salsa – Spicy, Fresh, Perfect for Fall

apple salsa

Fresh, crisp, and spicy – Apple salsa is a perfect companion to hot or cold foods.

Picture our family in the kitchen, surrounded by 27 pounds of apples that we’ve picked. We’ve already made apple pie, applesauce, and we’ve eaten what seems like an endless amount of apples out of hand. What’s left to make? “Apple salsa!” declares one of the kids. Apple salsa… Hmmm… That might just work.

Turns out, it’s super-easy and you can use it on just about anything. Spoon it over grilled chicken (warm or cold), stir it into yogurt, or eat it with chips… Either way, you’ll love the results.

Ingredients

  • 2 crisp fall apples cored and finely diced
  • 1 red bell pepper cored and finely diced
  • 1/2 red onion peeled and finely diced
  • 1 small jalapeno pepper cored, seeded, and finely diced
  • 1 clove garlic peeled and finely diced
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • 1 small bunch cilantro leaves chopped into small pieces
  • 1/4 tsp. Tajin classic seasoning optional
  • Dash salt

Instructions

  1. Add the apple, red pepper, onion, jalapeno, and garlic into a medium bowl and stir in the lemon and lime juice to combine. Toss gently with the cilantro, Tajin, and salt. Serve at room temperature with hot foods like grilled chicken; serve cold with cold foods like yogurt.

Note: We used Tajin classic seasoning to give it a super-tangy, lime-y taste. You can find Tajin in most major grocery stores and in Target. If you’re not going to use Tajin, give it an extra squirt of lime juice and a dash of cayenne pepper.

Also, note that if you want to serve the salsa with a hot dish, it’s fine to keep it at room temperature. But for that maximum crispy taste, serve it with something cold like yogurt or in a chilled chicken salad.
