Our favorite butter, Kerrygold, is having a gingerbread contest. And once we had the idea of making a gingerbread Irish pub, we couldn’t shake the feeling. We decided to try to build the kind of Irish pub we’d love to visit. So come on in, pull up a chair, and stay awhile:
Confession: This is only a three-sided pub. We left out the fourth wall so you could see inside. And at a few points we took pictures with even the third wall off, just to get a better view.
The windows and roof cut-outs are made with crushed up Jolly Ranchers (but any hard clear candy will do). Cut a hole in the gingerbread wall before you bake it, sprinkle the crushed candy evenly into the opening, and bake the gingerbread according to your recipe. Watch carefully to make sure it doesn’t burn. To make the roof cut-outs, we used a shamrock cookie cutter.
Coke candies line the shelves on the wall; candy food is on the bar and tables. The tables and the bar are gingerbread coated with chocolate. The bar is supported by stacked ginger cookies. The barstool and bench tops are dusted with edible silver powder. Just about the only thing that isn’t sweet in here are the legs of the barstools; they’re made of pasta.
And one of the only things that’s not edible are the “rabbit ears” on the caramel television that one of my sons added to the bar; those are made from toothpicks.
