Each month Netflix adds new titles to its lineup, and this coming month offers a major ‘treasure’: The 2004 film National Treasure. Now don’t scoff – hear me out: Mr. Jolly Tomato and I apparently missed this film the first time around; we were busy with toddlers and it didn’t really match up with our demographic. But our kids have recently discovered it and they think it’s the Best. Movie. Ever. It’s got action! Mystery! Drama! Nail-biting moments! A little bit of history thrown in! And it culminates with (spoiler alert) the biggest treasure discovery in world history. What kid wouldn’t love that?
So as we prepare to hunker down with National Treasure, we’re making this (National) Fruit Treasure Chest. It is actually surprisingly easy to put together. The main ingredient is one large pineapple.
To make the chest, chop the ends off the pineapple and discard. Then lie the pineapple down on its side and slice off one flat slice from the bottom so that it lies completely flat and doesn’t roll around. Reserve that slice.
Then make a careful cut on the top, about 3/4 of the way through the pineapple, to make your lid. Scoop out a small amount of pineapple from the inside, which will be the inner part of the treasure chest.
Last, fix the sides: Remember the slice you reserved from the bottom? Trim any excess fruit from the skin. Then cut the skin in half so that one side will cover up one end and one side will cover up the other end. Then attach the side skins to the pineapple with toothpicks. (You’ll have to cut off a tiny piece from the top of each skin slice to affix to the side of the treasure chest lid.)
Last, fill it up with fruit “jewels.” To make this grape necklace, we threaded the grapes with a needle over a long line of dental floss, but you could also use thread. We also propped it open with toothpicks, but if you want you could just fill it to the brim with fruit spilling out the edges.
There’s your treasure! And (spoiler alert #2) you didn’t even have to steal the Declaration of Independence and run for your life through three major metropolitan areas to find it. Happy movie-watching!
National Treasure will be available on Netflix on April 27.
