Fun Food Saturday: Wonton Wrappers

After last week’s cupfake fest on Fun Food Saturday, we got a little distracted thinking about the wonton wrappers in that cupcake lasagna recipe. We love working with wonton wrappers. In fact, when you’re cooking with kids, it’s hard to find something more fun and durable than these versatile little squares. There’s nothing to roll out or cut, and if you mess up once or twice, who cares? There’s plenty more in a pack.

Of course you can always use wonton wrappers to make your favorite dumplings or ravioli. But if you start thinking of the wonton wrappers as a food item in and of themselves, you can get pretty creative too. For instance, we love this recipe for seeded animal crackers made from wonton wrappers cut with a cookie cutter and baked into crispy fun shapes (from eHow.com). Once you get your kids cutting out their favorite shapes, they won’t want to stop.

Another one of our favorite things to do with wonton wrappers is to bake them into pretty little serving cups (spray a little cooking oil on them and press them into your cupcake tins) and then fill them with, well, anything. We love wonton shells filled with an Asian chicken salad, for instance, garnished with sesame seeds and cilantro. We also love the idea of these wonton tacos by Cynthia Matzat – it sure makes for a pretty little cup-sized dinner.

And then there’s the sweet side of things. For a simple, kid-friendly dessert, you can make an easy variation on Napoleons such as the Berry Napoleons with Sugared Wonton Wrappers from the Food Network. You can use whatever fruit is in season – and now that it’s summer, that means just about anything. So what are you waiting for? Get some cream and fruit, and start stacking!
