Healthy Travel Snacks and Fun with #StreamTeam

Got holiday travel plans? You’re going to need some healthy travel snacks – and some good entertainment – to keep everyone in the family happy.

Let’s start with travel snacks: Who has ever enthusiastically packed a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, only to open it up on the road and find it completely smooshed? Travel food needs to be both durable and appetizing, even when it’s been knocked around a little.

Crispy honey-almond cereal bars

That’s why we like sticking with crunchy foods – think cereal, trail mixes, and granola bars – that can stand up to a little knocking around. One of our favorites is these Crispy Honey-Almond Cereal Bars, which you can adapt to your personal preferences and the kids can help make. Other crunchy travel snacks we love – crackers, pretzels, nuts, and sunflower seeds.

Hidden Rose Apple

Continuing the crunchy theme, we like any fruits or vegetables that will hold their shape (and crunch) when on the road. Try apples, carrots, celery, jicama, tangerines, or edamame. We especially love these Hidden Rose Apples from Melissa’s Produce for the surprise value – they look like regular red-green apples on the outside, but when you take a bite, they’re a brilliant pink inside.

Hatch chile-coriander poporn

Last but not least we should mention our favorite portable crunchy travel snack: popcorn. You can do so much with popcorn in terms of flavorings, spices, and add-ins that you could really offer several different varieties of popcorn (one mixed with nuts and spices, one mixed with chocolate pieces, one flavored with cheese, and so on). For inspiration, check out the Hatch Chile-Coriander popcorn, a spicy and fragrant popcorn that hits a citrus-y high note with lime juice.

So now…speaking of popcorn… What are you going to do for entertainment when you travel? One recent survey showed that 23% of parents in the U.S. say one of their main concerns when traveling is keeping their kids entertained. And it’s true: Between delayed flights, lost luggage, public tantrums and that one thing you forgot to pack, traveling can get pretty dicey unless you have some good distractions for your kids. That’s where offline viewing on Netflix comes in. Before you hit the road, check out the ‘Available for Download’ menu on the Netflix app on your mobile or tablet device and browse all of the titles available to take with you whenever and wherever you want. (True story: We recently took a 5-hour road trip and the kids downloaded “Stranger Things” and “Beyond Stranger Things” for the ride. The only complaint we heard was that the drive “wasn’t long enough” – ha ha.)

Now get out there and enjoy your holiday travels!
