Foodie Events In Los Angeles

Somehow the end of summer is always the best time for foodie events in Los Angeles. If you want to see your favorite star chefs, or simply experience the best food, you have plenty of opportunities in the month to come.

Coming up on Labor Day weekend (September 2-4) there’s The Taste 2016, sponsored by the L.A. Times. There’s a whole weekend smorgasbord of events, starting with an opening night that’s a star-studded showcase of popular restaurants (including our local favorites MB Post and Love & Salt), a glamorous “Dinner with a Twist,” a Sunday “Block Party,” and a “Flavors of LA” event with the award-winning restaurant guru Jonathan Gold.

Also at The Taste, we’re especially looking forward to the Field to Fork event on Saturday, September 3, which features local farmers and chefs. One of our favorite chefs who will be serving up food at that event is Chef Diana Stavraidis of  Manhattan House, who has been working with local elementary school children to develop menu items from produce the students grew in their school gardens.

Event tickets for the Taste range from $100 to $150, with a weekend general admission pass available for $300.

On Friday, September 23, the James Beard Foundation’s Taste America event comes to Los Angeles with “A Night of Culinary Stars.” That evening’s dinner will feature a menu created by James Beard winner Scott Conant of Impero Caffe in New York City, along with local stars Curtis Stone of Gwen in Hollywood, Hedy Goldsmith of Sweet Hedy in Los Angeles, and Neal Fraser of Redbird in Los Angeles; as well as tastings from favorite local chefs. Guest emcees include James Beard award winner Barbara Fairchild, former editor-in-chief of Bon Appetit, and Aida Mollenkamp, founder of Salt & Wind.

Taste America is a national program of events that takes place in ten cities over six weekends each fall to raise funds for the James Beard Foundation. The James Beard Foundation celebrates, nurtures, and honors America’s diverse culinary heritage through programs such as educational initiatives, food industry awards, scholarships for culinary students, publications, chef advocacy training, and thought-leader convening.

Tickets for the Taste America event start at $275.

Last but not least, keep your eye out for KCRW’s “Good Food” Pie Contest on Sunday, October 2 at UCLA’s Fowler Museum. For the eighth year in a row, home cooks and professionals alike will compete side-by-side with their best pies on the table. The judges include a panel of of L.A.’s best chefs and food writers. Enter a pie or just head over and enjoy a slice of delicious pie. ‘Good Food’ host Evan Kleiman will serve as emcee during an afternoon filled with pie-tasting, music, food trucks, kids activities, and an artisan marketplace. If you’ve got a great pie, enter it by September 25.
