New Dole Products and A Holiday Appetizer

Want to shake up your veggie routine? There’s a bumper crop (pun intended) of new items on the market from Dole that are meant to tickle your taste buds and make it easy to eat your greens. In fact, we loved these salads so much we were inspired to make one into a tasty holiday salad appetizer…but more on that in a moment.

Dole TakeAways

The first new group of salads are called “Take Aways” because you can literally take them anywhere. Each of the salad components is wrapped separately inside the hexagonal box, along with a fork and a hand wipe. Then you open up the lettuce, the trimmings, and the dressing…mix…and eat. We loved being able to bring this salad along with us just about anywhere we go, and it’s a convenient size to pack for lunch as well.

Of the four initial flavor varieties inspired by American regional cuisine, two are plant-based protein options and two are topped with antibiotic-free grilled chicken. The protein sources include chicken, ancient grains, (wheatberries, quinoa) and seeds like pumpkin seeds or flax seeds. (Two of the salads are gluten-free.)
Dole TakeAway Salad Each Dole salad-based meal ranges from 300 to 380 calories and provides up to 19 grams of protein and up to 7g of fiber. Plus, the nutritional information is broken down for you inside the box so you know exactly how many calories you’re eating in the dressing versus the other toppings. Oh, and they’re super-tasty! You’ll find them on supermarket shelves starting this month at a suggested retail price of $4.99.

Next – have you always wanted celery with fewer strings attached? Dole has been listening to you! Well, of course it still has strings…but these tender young stalks from the heart of the celery have such crisp fibers that they snap when you bite them and you won’t see the trademark string hanging off the edge. Dole Premium Celery Hearts are a proprietary, consumer-preferred variety of celery exclusive to Dole. They offer a milder taste, superior crunch and less-stringy texture. It’s a great option for kids, especially if their complaint about celery is that it’s too stringy. These will also be on grocery store shelves in November to ensure that you have them in time for Thanksgiving.

Dole Chopped Pomegranate Salad

This month also marks the launch of some of our favorite new flavors of Dole Chopped salad kits, including the Chopped Poppy Seed Salad (sweet cranberries, roasted pepitas, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, romaine, kale, carrots, green onions and Dole poppy seed with Greek yogurt dressing) and the Chopped Pomegranate Salad (pomegranate infused cranberries, flax seeds, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, romaine, kale, carrots, green onions and Dole pomegranate vinaigrette).

These restaurant-caliber salads offer the nutrient density of antioxidant vitamins A, C, and K and provide an overall good source of fiber and an excellent source of Vitamins A and C. They also feature the trendy appeal of shaved Brussels sprouts for extra nutrient density and crunch. Yum, right? They are available in stores this month for a suggested retail price of $3.99.

These salads are so pretty from the moment you put them together that we couldn’t resist finding a fun way to serve them. So we took the pomegranate salad and served it up appetizer style, on top of thin slices of jicama. We sliced jicama in a mandolin slicer and then used a cookie cutter to make snowflake shapes (although you could really do any shape you wanted.) And – presto – there’s an instant (vegetarian and vegan) holiday starter for you right there!

Cranberry Pomegranate Jicama Snowflakes

Quick and easy vegetarian/vegan appetizers with cranberry pomegranate salad served over thin slices of jicama.
Ingredients
  • 1 bag Dole Pomegranate Chopped Salad kit
  • 1 medium jicama
Instructions
  1. Empty the contents of the salad kit (greens, cranberries, flaxseeds, and dressing) in a medium bowl and toss to combine.
  2. Using a mandolin or other thin slicing tool, slice approximately 16⅛ inch slices of jicama. Using a cookie cutter, cut each jicama slice into shapes (we used snowflakes).
  3. Arrange the jicama slices on a serving platter. Top each slice with a tablespoon of prepared salad and top with a cranberry.

The beauty of these little bites is that they’re vegetarian (and vegan, depending on which salad you use) and you can throw them together in a matter of seconds. And you’ll be getting in your daily greens as well. Win-win. Look for these and other great Dole options on the shelf this fall!
