Funny food is killing me this week. Every food I look at, I’m trying to picture how I can make a funnier version of it. The old mashed potato-and-meat “cupcake” thing? Done. “Grilled cheese” pound cake slices with yellow frosting? Check. The apples-as-french-fries trick? Yesssss!
Then today as I was looking into the fridge, I happened to notice one of my favorite cheese-tray staples, onion jam from Friend in Cheeses, staring me in the face, and I knew I had to find a way to use it. Peanut butter and onion jam? Bingo!
To be fair, it’s not that much of a leap. The onion jam is a little bit sweet and besides onions, its ingredients include apples, cinnamon, sugar, and curry. And the taste combination with peanut butter is pretty good. Still, if you’re the target of the joke, it’s a little jarring to have onion jam where you expected, say, strawberry. I served this sandwich with Simply 7 pink pomegranate chips just to bump up the “What the heck?!?!” factor.
