I’m taking a brief break from food for a few days while our family moves to a new house (Just a few blocks down the street; no biggie, right? Wrong! We’ve got Too. Much. Stuff. ). Fortunately what’s given me inspiration and a break from the whole undertaking is a new Netflix show called Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
The series stars Ellie Kemper (The Office) as a woman who escapes from a doomsday cult and starts life over in New York. Armed with just a backpack, light-up sneakers, and a couple of way-past-due library books, she’s ready to take on a world she didn’t even think existed anymore. Wide-eyed but resilient, nothing is going to stand in her way. She quickly finds a new job (working for 30 Rock‘s Jane Krakowski), a new roommate (Tituss Burgess, 30 Rock), and a new beginning. The 13-episode first season launches March 6 exclusively on Netflix.
My tween and I watched a special preview of the first six episodes, and we’re officially hooked. From her charming doofusness to her stuck-in-the-90’s naivete, we were laughing from start to finish. At one point when she snaps a picture with her new phone, she declares, “Hash brown no filter!” – which has now become part of the standard lexicon when anyone in our family takes a picture.
In honor of Kimmy Schmidt and her cheerful nothing-can-stop-me-now attitude, I’ve resolved to forge ahead with the move and not let anything get me down.
