Boysenberry Pie Is Back

Our favorite spring treat, boysenberry pie, is about to make its annual appearance. The Knott’s Berry Farm Boysenberry Festival comes back every year in celebration of the boysenberry.

Southern California is actually the home of the first boysenberry crop. In the 1930s, Walter Knott harvested the boysenberry, a cross between a loganberry, red raspberry and blackberry. He named the new berry after its originator Rudolph Boysen. Today, all boysenberries in the world can trace their roots back to Knott’s Berry Farm.

Boysenberry Festival Foods

As the unofficial home of boysenberries, Knott’s Berry Farm celebrates with a festival every spring. The festival features spring-themed events and an array of imaginative dishes. (Remember that this is a park that takes its food seriously.)

This year, Knott’s will debut its Berry Market Boysenberry BBQ Sauce. Other treats include fried cheese curds with spicy boysenberry dipping sauce, and a fish and chips sandwich with boysenberry tartar sauce. Additionally, there will be boysenberry-themed charbroiled treats served throughout the festival.

But if you’re simply looking for the “real deal,” you have just one stop to make. That stop, of course, is for Knotts’ world-famous boysenberry pie. The pie is sweet and tangy, paired with a flaky and buttery crust. Just like Mrs. Knott used to make.

For kids and family, you’ll find festival activities and displays throughout the park’s Old West section. And if you simply can’t get enough pie, check out the daily pie-eating contest.

Want to grow your own? You can purchase boysenberry plants at the park’s Walter & Cordelia Knott’s Original Roadside Boysenberry Stand.

Knott’s Berry Farm is located at 8039 Beach Blvd., Buena Park, CA. The festival is free to ticketed guests. Food and tasting items are available at additional cost. Tickets and more information are available at www.knotts.com.

Wow … I love Boysenberries but had no idea they could be traced back to Knott’s Berry Farm. Are the plants available online or anywhere else. I’m in NC and would love to grow some. Blackberries, Raspberries, etc. grow well here so I would assume that Boysenberries would do well, too! Thanks for an interesting and informative post!

You can buy the plants by ordering from nurseries online – just search for boysenberry plants – Amazon has them too! Thanks for stopping by!
