Good Burgers for “Good Burger” with Netflix

StreamTeamBadgeIt’s movie night! Few things get our kids more excited than that special night of the week when it’s time to hunker down with a great movie and some tasty snacks. That’s why we’re proud to be a part of the Netflix stream team, where we’ll be watching a movie and enjoying some tasty movie snacks once per month.

This month’s theme is “mini milestones” and we had a great time looking down the list of movies for this month and reminiscing about each of those movies and the associated milestones (First pet: Beethoven; first big game: D2 – The Mighty Ducks; first move: The Croods). We decided on “first job” – working in a burger shop – and watched the slapstick kids’ classic “Good Burger.” Good Burger tells the story of two teen-aged boys who need to save the burger joint where they work from going out of business when threatened with competition from a flashy new burger shop across the street. It’s endlessly goofy, but while your kids are giggling, you may just find yourself grinning along (just see if you can keep a straight face during the “strawberry jacuzzi”). And, unlike most teen or preteen oriented movies, this one’s pretty squeaky clean, with zero violence and only the mildest of profanity.

To go with our Good Burger, we decided we needed to eat – what else? – good burgers. But if we’re watching movies we don’t want big, sloppy, juicy burgers – we want something a little closer to finger food. These cheeseburger kebabs hit the spot – and they’re kid-friendly to boot.

Total time:
Serves: 4 kebabs
An easy, kid-friendly way to eat cheeseburgers...on a stick
  • 2 hamburger buns or small croissants
  • 2 cooked hamburgers
  • 10 grape tomatoes
  • 1 large leaf lettuce
  • 2 ounces cheddar cheese
  • For assembly: 10 mini bamboo skewers
  • Optional: 1 T. mayonnaise or Thousand Island dressing
  1. Prepare the ingredients: Cut the hamburger buns into small cubes, spread each open-face side with a small amount of mayonnaise or Thousand Island dressing (optional). Cut the hamburger into cubes. Coarsely chop the lettuce until it is in bite-sized pieces. Slice the cheddar cheese into thin slices and then cut into small 1-inch squares.
  2. Assemble the skewers: Thread the cut items onto each skewer, following the pattern of bread, burger, tomato, lettuce, cheese, bread. Repeat until all skewers are assembled. Keep skewers refrigerated or cooled until ready to serve.
