Watermelon carving is a time-honored summer tradition at our house, made even more fun when the kids get involved. It’s almost at the point where we can’t bear to see a plain round watermelon; we have an irresistible urge to carve it into something.
We’ve got more ideas than we can count so we’re just going to lay them all out here. Let’s start with one of our favorites, Shrek. We call this one the “Shrek-ermelon.”
Carving a shrek-ermelon is easier than you think – all it takes is a few well-placed grooved lines. The teeth are fun to make because there is no pressure: Even if you mess up, it looks like an ogre’s teeth anyway.
Next we have another favorite, Olaf from “Frozen.”
Notice that the head is “white” because we’ve shaved off the skin. When you look inside the mouth, you see that we’ve carved down to the beginning of the red. This model requires a few sticks, as well as a circle of carrot for the nose, some grapes for eyes, and cinnamon sticks for eyebrows. It’s all held together with toothpicks.

Next is another kid favorite – the Minecraft Creeper watermelon. Note that this one requires two watermelons. Slice off a flat top and bottom so the two will sit together nicely. Again, you can use toothpicks to secure them. Extra tip: Fill the “head” with chopped-up watermelon.

Got a Big Hero 6 Fan? We had a great time making this BayMax watermelon (BayMelon? WaterMax?). This one again requires two watermelons – and a lot of peeling to make it white.

Here’s an oldie but a goodie: the watermelon shark. Remember that you make white “teeth” by peeling off the green outer layer and leaving the white pith intact.

If you want, you can make a variation on this theme with a shark swimming through “waves.” This one we call “Raging Waters.” Even though it looks like two watermelon, we did this with just one. The top of the shark’s head is made from the top of the watermelon.
