After hearing the buzz for the last few months about those never-fried French fries, CravOn Fries (from our friends at the Lime Truck and now the CravOn Truck that’s been making its way around Southern California), we’ve been waiting for a chance to give them our own test run.
Now don’t get us wrong, we love a good fry…but too much of the greasy stuff is never a good thing. That’s where CravOn comes in. The deal with these fries is that they’re NOT fried at all, which means that there’s about half the fat in these fries than in regular fries.
Incidentally, these fries are made by people who know fries: the J.R. Simplot Company, the same company that pioneered dehydrated potatoes and first introduced frozen french fries in 1953. The reason CravOn fries are different from your typical frozen fries is that they don’t go through any flash-frying process. They are sliced, blanched, and then frozen. All you have to do is pick your fry (Steak cut? Diamond cut? Ripple cut?), pop them in the oven, and watch ’em crisp up.
When it came time for the great taste test, we held our collective breaths. Would they be like so many other soggy or cardboard-like frozen fries? Nope – they were just as crispy and delectable as predicted. And of course there was no argument at all from the kiddos.
Best of all, now we have the perfect excuse to serve our homemade ketchup again. Take that, fast-food places! No frying and no high-fructose corn syrup either.
