Produce delivery day! Even if you know what’s going to be in the box, it’s still exciting to open it up and see what’s inside. (The cat is standing guard just in case a vegetable jumps out and needs to be pounced upon.)
We’re happy to report that Melissa’s Produce has added a range of options to its organic produce delivery boxes for Southern California. We decided to try the Organic Family Box because it seemed to have a little something for everyone in our family.
This box, delivered to your door for $40 including delivery, includes:
1 bunch Broccoli
1 bunch Carrot
1 bunch Kale
1 bunch Leaf Lettuce
1 bunch Rainbow Chard
1 bunch Red Beets
4 Russet Potatoes
We love Melissa’s Produce organic delivery boxes because they’re always super-fresh and the portions are generous. (Love those individual wrappers for each pear, too!)
Of course we’ve mentioned that on produce delivery days we love to cook greens and make pesto. But we love doing fun things with the fruit as well – and that means more than just making mini-jitos. When we saw all of the citrus and ginger in the box, we knew we needed to make some Orange-Ginger Lemonade. It’s unbelievably refreshing, and the kids just lap it up:
1 cup water
2/3 cup sugar
1 tsp. finely grated fresh ginger
Juice of two large lemons
Juice of one orange
1. In a medium saucepan, heat together the water and sugar until the sugar dissolves. Stir in the ginger and set aside the mixture to cool.
2. Squeeze the lemons and orange to yield approximately 1 cup of juice. Add the cooled ginger syrup mixture and stir well. Pour the mixture into a standard 60-ounce pitcher and add enough crushed ice to fill the pitcher about 1/2 full. Add water to fill up the rest of the pitcher.
3. Serve immediately in a tall glass or cup with fresh lemon and orange wedges. Serves 6.
